In Korea, the mortality rate of pedestrian in crosswalk at night is 62% among OECD country. There are many reasons but mostly drivers can not distinguish between pedestrian and shadow from building. Personally, I also had an experience to hit by car or motorcycle at night. This is also related with “Fast, Fast Culture” in Korea. Some drivers ignore even if traffic light is on green at night in order to go fast.

I would like to develop a wearable safety garment for pedestrians or urban user at night. The idea of this project is when it becomes certain level of darkness, it turns itself automatically and illuminates parts of user’s body in dark environment. This product will let drivers recognize people instantly at night and allow people to be seen.
Here’s how the driver’s visibility zone is changing because of the darkness and heavy weather conditions:

02_ Concept
I take a concept from Natural Defense Mechanisms. Especially, the warning sign for potential predators.Aposematism or aposenmatic appearance is one of the well know defense mechanisms when animals prevents themselves or warn potential predators.

Aposematism is included of bright bold color or patterns that stand out dramatically against the background. The most common and effective colours are red, yellow, black and white that provides high-contrast patterns in order to show distance dependent camouflage. Warning signals indicate to predators their prey might be toxic. I choose four different types of self defense mechanism from animals and try to adjust in to my idea for form finding. I will develop three different style of safety items. First will be very practical concept and second is experimental form and last can be fashionable shape.
